We have used tank protectors in our workshop ever since they were invented. It's so easy to drop a tool, part or corrosive fluid on the tank and this gives the paint work a far better chance of survival. It won't stop a 4 pound lump hammer dropped from six feet, but a small hand tool slipping from your hand will not scratch paint of you have a tank protector. We leave them on all bike tanks parted in our workshop all the time
Underneath it has an anti-slip cushion material and on top an easy wipe clean nylon surface. It makes no difference what the tank it made of it still offers great protection from accidental scratches and spillages, particularly brake fluid splashes.
